Artist or Scholar in Residence
Artist in Residence (2 people)
Through an HSA sponsored grant, Merion brings in a resident artist or scholar who has been approved by the executive board of the HSA. The resident then works with the children to create an installation piece in the school.
Chairpersons for this HSA program help support the chosen artist or scholar with whatever the needs may be. This may mean working with the principal to arrange meeting times in classrooms, creating and distributing fliers, writing ads for the weekly FYI, helping on the days activities are occurring, and so forth. Additionally, the chairpersons should recruit 2 parent volunteers per classroom, ideally via a sign up genius, to assist the day that the artist visits the classrooms.
The time commitment will vary based on the artist or scholar and proposal. Typically there are specific days in which the artist/scholar is onsite and will require the chairperson’s assistance. Past proposals have included a screen printing/batik artist (see the wall hangings in the library) and a professional choreographer who conducted a program integrating math/geometry, art (using a piece from the Art Goes to School portfolio), and dance.
The budget for this program ranges based on materials and artist labor. The budget must be approved by the HSA Executive Board.
Timing: Ongoing through the school year
