Merion Gives Back
Art Supplies Drive
Help to brighten the holidays for the children of Add B Anderson school in West Philadelphia with a donation of art supplies! The school is especially low on pencils, markers, crayons, fabric, hand-held pencil sharpeners and erasers. Please send in your donations through next Friday, Dec 21, and there will be a collection box in the lobby.
Philabundance Food Drive
Please help during our final collection weeks! Merion families donated more than 7,000 pounds of food, filling up 15 folding tables in the main hallway. So far we have 8 filled tables outside the office. Please help make a difference in the lives of hungry families in our area.
Food pick-up will be Thursday morning, Dec 20.
Hooded Sweatshirt Drive
"So Hood Love Project" is collecting new and gently used hoodies and distributing them on to the homeless in Philadelphia with messages of kindness and love. Anyone who would like to donate, please leave your hoodies in the designated box in the Merion office before Friday, Dec 21.
Thanks to all Merion families for everything you do for our school and community. Happy Holidays!
Winter Box Top Collection Ends Tomorrow!
Save those Box Tops from your grocery purchases! The deadline for the fall classroom competition is next Friday, Dec 14. Please send them in with your child in a ziplock bag with your child's name, classroom, and the number of Box Tops written on it. You can also drop them off yourself in the box at the HSA table just outside the Merion School Office. (If you have the time, we also really appreciate it when the Box Tops are neatly trimmed around the edges!)
As of our most recent count at the end of October, the classroom leaders were as follows:
2G with 446
2K with 385
4C with 347
3D with 236
3S with 178
The top three classes win the fall competition!
Calling All Third Grade Parents
Have you heard about Prime Time Reading Night? It's a special event just for 3rd graders designed to promote the love of reading through a series of activities including a visit from a local author, illustrating for books, and more. The event will be held the evening of Thursday, Mar 21 and we're looking for parents to help. It's low commitment (1-2 meetings max) and lots of fun for the kids. If interested in helping, email Kirstin (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Lauren (email@example.com). First meeting not until January.
Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund Recognition Cards
Looking for a meaningful way to acknowledge your child's teacher at the holidays? A great option is to give a Lower Merion Township Scholarship Fund Recognition card in his/her name. LMTSF has been helping our high school graduates realize their college dreams for more than 50 years! Currently, 112 LMSD graduates are attending colleges with grants from the Scholarship Fund. These grants help defray the ever increasing costs to attend college. By donating to the Scholarship Fund, you would be helping a student that might have been taught by your teacher or may go to help a classmate in the future!
Recognition cards are on sale in your child's school office for $15 per card or 3 cards for $40, OR for purchase through the website, www.lmtsf.org. Please consider supporting a Lower Merion School District graduate while honoring a special teacher, specialist, support staff, or school administrator! For additional information, please contact Mary Donoghue (DonoghM@lmsd.org) in the Scholarship Fund Office.
From the Nurses Office
When to keep you child at home
It is important to maintain a healthy environment in the classroom to protect all students. The following symptoms may indicate contagious illness. Your child should be kept at home if any of these occur:
Pertussis: Students may return to school no less than 5 days after starting prescribed antibiotic treatment.
The student experiencing any of the contagious conditions listed below will be readmitted to school after 24-48 hours of appropriate therapy per guidelines of the Department of Health.
Head lice (pediculosis): Students may return when appropriately treated as determined by the School Nurse. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other national health agencies do not recommend "no nit" polices for schools and have found them unnecessary and ineffective for a condition that poses no health risk. However since no pediculocide is 100% effective, removal of nits is important in preventing infestation. It is important for parents/guardians to ensure that nits are removed after a child is treated for head lice. Please notify the School Nurse if your child has been treated for head lice. It is advisable for parents to check their child's hair for head lice weekly. Links to information about head lice are located in the resources section.
Fifth disease: Children with fifth disease are not excluded from school however parents should notify School Nurse
The Lower Merion School District complies with the guidance and directives of the Montgomery County and Pennsylvania Departments of Health in matters of communicable illness and public health. The Departments of Health can require exclusion of children from school if they pose a threat to the health of others. Additionally they may require exclusion of unimmunized children if there is an outbreak of communicable illness.
