Keep Bringing in Box Tops!
Save those Box Tops from your grocery purchases! The deadline for the fall classroom competition is next Friday, Dec 14. Please send them in with your child in a ziplock bag with your child's name, classroom, and the number of Box Tops written on it. You can also drop them off yourself in the box at the HSA table just outside the Merion School Office. (If you have the time, we also really appreciate it when the Box Tops are neatly trimmed around the edges!)
As of our most recent count at the end of October, the classroom leaders were as follows:
2G with 446
2K with 385
4C with 347
3D with 236
3S with 178
The top three classes win the fall competition!
Calling All Third Grade Parents
Have you heard about Prime Time Reading Night? It's a special event just for 3rd graders designed to promote the love of reading through a series of activities including a visit from a local author, illustrating for books, and more. The event will be held the evening of Thursday, Mar 21 and we're looking for parents to help. It's low commitment (1-2 meetings max) and lots of fun for the kids. If interested in helping, email Kirstin (email@example.com) or Lauren (firstname.lastname@example.org). First meeting not until January.
From the Nurses Office
When to keep you child at home
It is important to maintain a healthy environment in the classroom to protect all students. The following symptoms may indicate contagious illness. Your child should be kept at home if any of these occur:
Pertussis: Students may return to school no less than 5 days after starting prescribed antibiotic treatment.
The student experiencing any of the contagious conditions listed below will be readmitted to school after 24-48 hours of appropriate therapy per guidelines of the Department of Health.
Head lice (pediculosis): Students may return when appropriately treated as determined by the School Nurse. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and other national health agencies do not recommend "no nit" polices for schools and have found them unnecessary and ineffective for a condition that poses no health risk. However since no pediculocide is 100% effective, removal of nits is important in preventing infestation. It is important for parents/guardians to ensure that nits are removed after a child is treated for head lice. Please notify the School Nurse if your child has been treated for head lice. It is advisable for parents to check their child's hair for head lice weekly. Links to information about head lice are located in the resources section.
Fifth disease: Children with fifth disease are not excluded from school however parents should notify School Nurse
The Lower Merion School District complies with the guidance and directives of the Montgomery County and Pennsylvania Departments of Health in matters of communicable illness and public health. The Departments of Health can require exclusion of children from school if they pose a threat to the health of others. Additionally they may require exclusion of unimmunized children if there is an outbreak of communicable illness.

ISC Hot Topic: STRESS! From the Kitchen to the Classroom, What We Can Do To Help our High School Students
When - Tuesday, Dec 11, 9:30-11 am
Where - Academy Building (adjacent to Bala Cynwyd Middle School)
Believe the hype, our students are stressed out. They feel pressure to take an onerous course load, be the best on the field or take a leadership position in a club, as well as keep up with friends on social media. Their own expectations and goals are high. The school district recognizes the increased level of stress our students are felling and Dr. Andrea Fina, School Psychologist, Harrison HS will share some of the structures and supports that are in place to address them. Please join us for this important presentation and dynamic conversation.
Gender & Sexuality Inclusivity and Belonging Group Discussion
When - Tuesday, Dec 18, 4:15 - 5:45 pm
Where - Admin Building, Room 264, 301 E. Montgomery Ave., Ardmore
The Gender & Sexuality Inclusivity and Belonging Group (GSIB) cordially invites LMSD parents and guardians of Students in K-12 to join a collaborative discussion.
GSIB functions as a volunteer group of School Personnel within LMSD to support and address the unique needs of students who may be experiencing both challenges and strengths related to their gender (transgender, gender expansive, intersex, etc.) and/or sexual (lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, etc.) minority identities.
This meeting is open to adult family members who would like to take part in an open discussion and collaboratively share ideas with other adult family members and the volunteer members of GSIB. Discussion focuses on topics related to students sexual and gender identities, thereby, informing the process for families and school members alike about creating a supportive school community where all students thrive and reach their potential.
In order to attend, please RSVP no later than Thursday Dec 13 by emailing: Beth Cavalier (CavaliE@lmsd.org) or Gina Virkler (VIRKLEG@lmsd.org).
